Driveway Alert

More and more people are finding the importance of ensuring the security of their home. While this generally encompasses keeping the interior of your home (people, pets and furniture) safe from unwanted intruders, home security also includes guarding your driveway and its 'trespassers' (invited and uninvited). For this a driveway alert acts as a motion detector that pre-warns you when visitors are coming to your door.

While most motion sensors can be bought at a relatively inexpensive price, they come in a variety of functions to suit homes of varying sizes and with varying needs. Some driveways are long while others, short; some homes have more 'blind spots' than others and may require more than one sensor, while others just have the basic requirements of a single sensor and monitor, some homeowners prefer additional functions, so on and so forth.

These motion detectors are now also available in wireless form where batteries instead of electricity are used. While you will need to change the battery when it dies, a wireless detector has the advantage of being able to run and alert you of strangers even during a blackout or a power shortage.

The average driveway alert has a range of about 400 feet or 121 meters and is easy to install and requires little maintenance. If you have a long driveway, then you might want to look for a sensor with a longer range although you must be prepared to fork out more money for one with this additional function.

If you want a motion detector just to sense for vehicles entering your driveway, there are systems that only detect motion from large metallic objects. This is type of alert system uses a metal-detecting probe and won't be easily triggered by animals or people going past. If you're more concerned about people entering your driveway, then you may want to consider a motion-sensing detector. These systems, however, might be triggered by animals (like cats, for example) passing by and may cause several false alarms. Positioning these units higher up rather than near ground level would help to reduce the chances of these units from being accidentally triggered by small animals.

With a driveway alert, you'll never be caught unaware by surprise visitors again!
